Naturalization & CRBA

Eligibility for Naturalization

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) for at least 5 years (3 years if married to a U.S. citizen).
  • Have resided in the U.S. continuously for 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen).
  • Meet English language and civics knowledge requirements.
  • Demonstrate good moral character.
  • Be willing to take the Oath of Allegiance.

The Naturalization Process

Submit your application for naturalization.

Biometrics Appointment

Complete fingerprinting and background checks.

Interview

Answer questions about your application and U.S. civics.

Decision

USCIS will approve or deny your application.

Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA)

Establish U.S. Citizenship for Your Child Born Overseas

If you are a U.S. citizen and your child was born outside the United States, it's crucial to establish their U.S. citizenship. A Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) is an official document certifying your child's U.S. citizenship, allowing them to obtain a U.S. passport and enjoy the rights of a U.S. citizen.

What is a CRBA?

A CRBA is issued by the U.S. Department of State to children born abroad to at least one U.S. citizen parent. It serves as proof of U.S. citizenship by birth, enabling access to a U.S. passport and U.S. rights.

Eligibility for a CRBA

  • At least one parent must be a U.S. citizen at the time of the child's birth.
  • The child must be born outside the U.S.
  • The U.S. citizen parent must meet physical presence requirements, typically 5 years in the U.S., with 2 of those after age 14.

Steps to Apply for a CRBA

Proof of U.S. citizenship for the parent(s), child's birth certificate, and physical presence evidence.

Complete Form DS-2029

Submit the application for the CRBA.

Submit the Application

Apply in person at a U.S. embassy or consulate.

Processing

Wait for processing (several weeks).

05

Receive CRBA

Once approved, use it to apply for a U.S. passport.
